Aaron Buerge, the star of 'The Bachelor' season two, says that despite recently filing for bankrupcy, he's far from broke.
Buerge is now the proud father of an 18-month-old daughter with his wife, Angye McIntosh, who he met after calling off his engagement with 'Bachelor' contestant Helene Eksterowicz.
Despite his happy home life, things haven't been as great on the business front for Buerge, a restaurant owner and banker, who declared personal bankruptcy last week. Buerge says that his financial troubles are the result of the collapse of a bank with whom he held a business loan. When the loan was transferred to a new institution, he was asked to pay up sooner than he had anticipated.
"We've been making payments ... every month, but they've just been pushing to come after some private assets that I might have," he tells PEOPLE.
"I'm not broke," he says. "I'm not in financial distress -- nothing like that. Otherwise, I wouldn't be paying everybody."
While Buerge's current $9.3 million in debt looms large, particularly when up against his comparatively paltry $2.3 million in personal assets, his focus remains on his family and not his finances.
"I'm more focused on my family than on continuing to pay to fight the lawsuit for who-knows-how-long," he says. "I'm a family guy now. That kind of changes a guy's priorities in life."
