It was a fitting way for Lady Gaga to perform her fresh single "Born This Way" live for the first time.

Emerging from a womb-like vessel, in which she made the rounds of the red carpet earlier, Gaga, 24, shimmied and shook in a skin-tight latex getup – complete with pointy shoulder pads and a side-ponytail.

Embryonic entrance aside, the pop star kept it pretty simple.

No glitter, no standing ovation from the audience, no duet partner, this year's performance was a change of pace from last year's high-concept Grammy performance with Elton John. This year, Gaga focused on a spirited dance routine and, at one point, pounded an organ studded with what looked like dolls' heads.

Later, the singer accepted a Grammy for best pop vocal album for The Fame Monster.

But after months of buzz about her new tune – including a comment from her choreographer on the red carpet that her performance would "shift the world" – we want to know:
