J. Cole, Wale NBA All-Star Weekend Show Features Drake, Melanie Fiona

NBA All-Star Weekend is officially under way in Los Angeles, and Wale and J. Cole helped to kick it off with a sold-out show at the House of Blues in West Hollywood on Friday night. The Roc Nation duo treated their fans, who had braved the uncharacteristically cold and damp Southern California weather, with an amazing performance as well as a surprise guest.

Drake hit the stage during J. Cole's set to perform their salacious smash hit "In the Morning." The crowd erupted as soon as the track began to play, but it got even louder once Drake hit the stage to seduce nearly every young lady in attendance with his romantic style.

"Baby, you wintertime cold/ The night is still young, drink that dinner wine slow/ I'm trying to make the goose bumps on your inner thigh show."

J. Cole and Drake released the video for the track this past week on Valentine's Day. It features behind-the-scenes footage from their Paris stop on Drake's Lights, Dreams and Nightmares European tour. When MTV News caught up with Cole before the show, he said that video was meant to be something really organic, even though it's becoming something much bigger.

"It was really a viral video. At the end of the day, it wasn't supposed to be a Hype Williams production or nothing. I wanted it to be really organic, just to document the tour. Just to document that moment in my life, or our lives, touring Europe for the first time."

Cole said this was his first All-Star weekend, and he loved the energy it brought to the town. He has been in L.A. for two weeks now, since the Grammy Awards as well as working on his project with Kendrick Lamar. He said he hopes to play in the All-Star celebrity game next year to fulfill his hoop dreams.

Another Canadian singer hopped on the stage as well. Fellow Roc Nation artist Melanie Fiona joined Cole and Wale onstage for their first-ever performance of Wale's "Beautiful Bliss."

Wale opened his show with his usual vigor. During his set, which included tracks from his More About Nothing mixtape and Attention Deficit, the crowd roared once his collaboration with Waka Flocka and Roscoe Dash came on. But by that time, he had already cleared a space for himself to dance and shake his dreads as the crowd helped him rap. As far as he was concerned, it was business as usual, making sure the crowd had an amazing time.

"We're used to this now. We've done a lot of sold-out shows together. I just think the significance of this is it being All-Star weekend," Wale said. "I think being a quote-unquote 'real' hip-hop show, that's what makes it special."

Drake And His Mom Share Excitement Over Grammy Night

If there's one person that knows all too well about Drake's fast-track rise to the top of the charts, it's his mother, Sandi Graham. During MTV News' Grammy Awards red-carpet live-stream on Sunday, the Young Money MC and his mom shared their excitement over the landmark event with hosts "Jersey Shore" starlet Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Sway.

"I'm excited. I'm glad you're here," a fresh-suited Drake told the breakout reality star after exchanging some friendly (and flirty) lines. However, the hip-hop heavyweight was also excited to show off his date for the big night: his mother.

After exchanging a hug with the Snooks, Sandi went on to explain to the hosts about how pleased she was to share the Grammy evening with her son. "It is an extremely exciting moment. I've always been proud of my son, but to see him come to a pinnacle like this is really quite a journey," she told Sway before flashing a smile. "It's wonderful. I feel honored to be here, to be part of this."

"He's a great challenge, but in a great way. He is a unique guy," she continued.

As for Drake's onstage collabo with Rihanna, the rapper explained that preparation for the performance with the Barbadian songstress went smoothly as ever due to their tight connection.

"Rehearsal was just like any other day with us. I mean, we have an incredible bond," he said. "It was amazing to get a #1 song with somebody that I love dearly. Now to share it with the world tonight on this platform — I'm very excited."

Even with his slew of song team-ups, Drake admitted that Rihanna is the only one he would want to share the Grammy stage with, saying, "I wouldn't want to be up there with anyone else this year. I think it's a great step for both of us."

Esperanza Spalding Beats Justin Bieber, Drake For Best New Artist

With household names like Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence + the Machine and even Mumford & Sons all battling it out for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards, it was an unexpected victory for Esperanza Spalding, who nabbed the prize.

Donning a lime green halter gown with pink shoes, the jazz chanteuse took the stage and graciously accepted her prize, after passing Drake on the way. "I know I don't have a lot of time, so first, thank you to the academy for even nominating me in this category," she said. "Thank you to the incredible community and family of musicians I'm so blessed to be a part of... my friends in Portland, all my teachers, colleagues... my beautiful family who's here," she continued, before naming names.

The smiling award-winner stated that she had every intention of using this opportunity to continue making music that she felt her friends, fans and family would be proud of. "I take this honor to heart so sincerely, and I'll do my damndest to make a whole lot of great music for all of you," she gushed. "It's such a blessing and an honor. God bless. Thank you."

While most thought the Best New Artist would be landing in the hands of Drake, Bieber or Florence, Spalding came out from behind thanks to a strong following in the jazz community. In 2010 she released several albums including Reencontro and Chamber Music Society, and she also joined Prince for select dates on his Welcome 2 America Tour. Were you surprised by Esperanza Spalding's win? Let us know in the comments!
