Radcliffe to Receive Hero Award

RADCLIFFE TO RECEIVE HERO AWARD
Daniel Radcliffe is to receive an award for being ''an inspiration to sexual minority youths.''

The 21-year-old actor will be honored by The Trevor Project - an anti-suicide/support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender teenagers - with their Hero Award at a ceremony in New York in June to recognize his work with the organization.

Daniel - who started working with the group two years ago - said: "It's fantastic. The fact that they think of what I've done by promoting awareness of the Trevor Project itself and the issues that it works to promote and help is a great honor."

"I think that out of everything that I've done so far in my career, I think this is absolutely one of the most important, if not the most important, thing that I'm associated with."

The "Harry Potter" star - who previously appeared in a public service announcement (PSA) for the Trevor Project's 24-hour help line - also paid tribute to the 160 volunteers and counselors at the facility.

He said: "The people that are doing the heroic things are the people answering phones 24 hours a day in the Trevor call centers."

The Trevor Project was founded in 1998 by filmmakers James Lecesne, Peggy Rajski and Randy Stone.

Previous recipients of the Hero award include actor Nathan Lane, actress Vanessa Williams and "Milk" screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.

Lifetime award for David Dimbleby

24 February 2011 Last updated at 11:55 GMT David Dimbleby Dimbleby began working for the BBC as a news reporter in 1961 Veteran broadcaster David Dimbleby has been given a lifetime achievement prize at the Royal Television Society's (RTS) journalism awards.

The Question Time host was described by judges as a "giant of television journalism" at the ceremony in London.

Sky News was named news channel of the year for a second time in a row, while ITV News at Ten was awarded news programme of the year.

Presenter of the year went to Channel 4 newsreader Jon Snow.

Snow, who beat Dimbleby and Sky News's Anna Botting to the prize, was praised by the judges for his "beautifully written and powerfully observed" scripts.

The judges' award went to the BBC, ITV and Sky negotiating teams for the Prime Ministerial Debates in the run-up to last May's General Election.

They said it was a "genuinely historic agreement and in most people's eyes the debates more than lived up to their billing".

BBC Northern Ireland collected both the Nations and Regions Current Affairs and News Event, and Scoop of the Year prizes for Spotlight: The Iris Robinson Investigation.

While Sky's Alex Crawford picked up a second consecutive television journalist of the year prize.

Overall, the BBC and ITV both picked up four awards each on the night, while Sky and Channel 4 each won three.

Burns book project wins £1m award

20 February 2011 Last updated at 11:09 GMT Robert Burns Academics say the project marks "a seismic shift" in Burns studies A Scottish university has been given £1m to produce the first complete scholarly edition of the works of Robert Burns.

Glasgow University's Centre for Robert Burns Studies will publish six volumes over the next eight years, with another six to follow in the next decade.

They will include The Oxford Handbook to Robert Burns and The Collected Prose of Robert Burns.

The work will be funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

The £1m award follows an Oxford University Press (OUP) contract which the university secured two years ago to produce the work.

The project - Editing Robert Burns for the 21st Century - will involve a team of five literary scholars at Glasgow led by Dr Gerry Carruthers, a leading international Burns expert.

Dr Carruthers said the project marked "a seismic shift" in Burns studies.

He said: "We now have the platform to assert Burns's status as a major Romantic-period artist alongside the likes of William Wordsworth and John Keats."

New editions

The Glasgow OUP edition will feature the bard's prose works, his letters, poems, songs and other miscellaneous writing.

Two new editions of Burns's prose works and his songs for James Johnson's The Scots Musical Museum and George Thomson's Original Scottish Airs will be published.

Alongside these editions, newly commissioned performances will be produced and uploaded online.

It is hoped the first volume will be ready for publication late next year.

The funding award follows the launch last month of a free mobile phone application developed by the Scottish government to give instant access to the complete works of the national bard.

It also comes after the first minister's call for all school children visit the new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway.
