Prince to have British trade role downgraded: report (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) – British ministers will downgrade Prince Andrew's role as a trade ambassador over his association with a convicted paedophile, the Telegraph newspaper reported Monday.

Ministers will carry out a review into Andrew's position, which could result in the queen's second son losing his role completely, government sources told the British newspaper.

The prince came under increased fire after it emerged that US businessman Jeffrey Epstein -- who served 18 months in jail for child sex offences -- had paid off debts accrued by the Duchess of York, Andrew's former wife.

Andrew has been a guest at Epstein's Florida mansion where underage girls were abused but there has been no suggestion that the fourth-in-line to the British throne had ever been guilty of any wrongdoing.

Diplomatic cables released by the WikiLeaks website last year showed how US officials were shocked by the "rude" prince's "astonishing display of candour" during a business trip to Kyrgyzstan.

A senior Conservative minister told the Telegraph that Andrew's position was fast becoming untenable due to his track record of poor judgement.

"There appears to be no discernible mental activity," the minister said. "I feel sorry for him. He has no friends and so is surrounded by these vile people."

Another government source told the paper: "We won?t be giving a full-throated defence of him. There won?t be many tears shed if he resigns."

Foreign Secretary William Hague earlier defended the prince, claiming he had done "a lot of good for the UK."

Report: Kate Middleton Wedding Dress Designer Chosen

Kate Middleton and Sarah BurtonKate Middleton's wedding dress designer is Alexander McQueen creative director, Sarah Burton, according to reports in British newspapers.

While McQueen officials are issuing denials -- which they would be obliged to do, even if it were true -- sources told the UK's Telegraph that Burton has been chosen for her discretion, talent, and quirky, feminine take on elegance.

The 36-year-old was promoted to the top design job after McQueen himself committed suicide last year. First Lady Michelle Obama caused a stir when she wore one of Burton's McQueen designs to a State Dinner for Chinese president Hu Jintao in January.

London's Sunday Times is also reporting McQueen's CEO Jonathan Akeroyd gushed to a colleague the fashion house had won the coveted commission for Middleton's April 29 wedding to longtime love, Prince William.

Burton denied the reports regarding her involvement to Vogue UK: "I'm not doing it." Akeroyd also denied the rumors saying: "No, not at all. I'm the CEO, I would know if we were doing it."

The commission has also been rumored to belong to Bruce Oldfield, a favorite of the late Princess Diana and designer of Queen Rania of Jordan's wedding dress.

Even if the latest rumors are true, Burton and company wouldn't want to have the exalted McQueen name stepping on a future queen's well-shod toes.

The designers of Princess Diana's 1981 wedding dress, David and Elizabeth Emanuel, repeatedly denied their role as royal couturier.

Middleton has made it clear her dress designer is to remain a closely-guarded state secret until her wedding day, so she can surprise her fiancé as she walks down the long, dramatic Westminster Abbey aisle.

Last week, St. James Palace announced the highly-anticipated dress details would be released first on its own Web site, The Royal Wedding.

Daily Telegraph Fashion Editor Hilary Alexander told London's Daily Mail if the Burton/McQueen news is true, it's a welcome relief for fashion: "It's desperately in need of an injection of fabulousness in the wake of the whole John Galliano scandal."

Early Report: 'Just Go With It' Just Barely Wins the Weekend Over Justin Bieber

Feb 13th 2011 02:19PMEmail ThisAs our pals at Moviefone analyze the new winners at the box office, one thing's clear: This was a very good weekend for movies starting with the letters J-U-S-T.

So far, the Adam Sandler-Jennifer Aniston comedy 'Just Go With It' and the concert doc 'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never' are neck-and-neck. When final numbers are released Monday, positions could switch, but it looks like 'Just Go With it' had the bigger weekend, at an estimated $31 million. That's a fairly typical opening for Sandler, but it's great news for his co-star: it's the best debut for Aniston since the $36.4 million premiere of 2008's 'Marley & Me.'

And talk about missed connections: the romantic comedy may have done even better, had Valentine's Day not fallen on a Monday this year.
Tallying up the totals makes for a close race, though. At press time, Bieber was one floppy lock of hair behind Sandler for the weekend, and because of Thursday previews, about one strand of hair ahead for the total gross since opening. From Friday to Sunday, studio estimates place the teen-pop heartthrob's movie at $30.3 million. But add in the take from early 'Never Say Never' screenings on Thursday, and its estimated total is a mere $3,000 ahead of 'Just Go With It'.

Whether the 3-D doc will have legs is uncertain -- event movies like this tend to get most of their audience the first weekend -- but for now, Bieber is definitely giving the Sandman a serious run for his money.

'Gnomeo & Juliet' enjoyed a strong third place debut with an estimated $25.5 million. It's a lot better than the movie, co-starring Emily Blunt, was expected to do (with predictions running at about $15 million). The cartoon had a long and troubled production history, and only a middling marketing push from Disney, but it was helped by strong reviews, the 3-D surcharge, a familiar Elton John soundtrack to appeal to grownups, and a relative absence of other family fare at the multiplex.

'The Eagle,' the weekend's fourth new wide release, earned just an estimated $8.6 million. Why didn't it fly higher? Perhaps because it was going after the same young male audience as 'Just Go With It,' or because there are still two or three other strong action movies still in multiplexes, or because Channing Tatum simply isn't a leading man who can open a movie yet -- unlike Sandler, Bieber, and an animated lawn gnome.

Last week's champ, 'The Roommate,' fell to fifth place with an estimated $8.4 million. That's a 44 percent drop from its opening weekend, typical for a mid-level thriller like this. Its two-weekend total stands at $26.1 million.
