James Franco Takes Dig at Oscar Writer on Twitter

It's no secret that James Franco's hosting job wasn't really up to par. Critics slammed his barely there attitude and general awkwardness during the telecast. But when Oscar joke writer Bruce Vilanch opened up to New York magazine's Vulture blog about Franco's flop, the actor took to Twitter to return a dig at Vilanch.

"He has so many balls in the air, he didn't get to town till Thursday before the show on Sunday," Vilanch told Vulture about Franco's busy schedule. "I don't think he realized how big a deal it is to do it until he was actually confronted with it. I think he thought he would kind of ... I don't know what he thought."

Vilanch, along with pretty much everyone else watching the show, thought it was all some kind of act.

Franco apparently didn't take Vilanch's comments too well, and he tweeted a graffiti-covered picture of himself with Vilanch backstage at the Oscars.

"James f**ked up the Oscars. Trust me, I know comedy," Franco scribbled on the photo, in dialogue bubbles coming from Vilanch's mouth. "I mean, come on, I write for Bette Midler!"

Franco has since deleted the tweet and photo, but Vulture was lucky enough to grab it before he took it down.

James McAvoy was once so poor he survived for five years on ?1,200.

The "Gnomeo and Juliet" star and his sister Joy were raised by their grandparents and mother after their parents divorced and although he had a happy childhood, James admitted the family had so little money that he couldn't believe it when he was paid ?1,200 for his debut role in "The Near Room" in 1995.

The Scottish actor - who was raised in Glasgow - said in an interview with WWD: "We lived in a kind of rough-enough area. My grandparents and mother were very protective and made sure that no harm came to us. They were quite controlling, and until about the age of 15 or 16, I was firmly on a leash."

"I got paid something like ?1,200 pounds [for 'The Near Room'] - and that kept me going for about five years."

James has recently finished filming "The Conspirator" with Robin Wright and the actress called James the "life of the party."

She said: "He is Mr. Congeniality, the life of the party. Everyone loves him. You always hear these terrible rumors about how self-consumed and narcissistic actors are. But James is not like that at all. He's thoughtful and very human. He believes we are all one - he's just a love."

LeBron James: 'Rebuilding Basketball Courts ... Is One of My Biggest Priorities'

NBA superstar LeBron James learned how to play basketball on the playgrounds of Akron, Ohio, and now he's teamed up with rap mogul Jay-Z and Sprite to launch a new program to rebuild courts all over the United States.

"Rebuilding basketball courts, playgrounds, gyms and places for young people to play is one of my biggest priorities," he told PopEater via e-mail.

We also asked the Miami Heat player why the initiative is important to him and about his new cartoon web series, 'The LeBrons.' Check it out inside!

Is it important to you to use your celebrity for causes like this?
Rebuilding basketball courts, playgrounds, gyms and places for young people to play is one of my biggest priorities. The Sprite Spark Parks Project offers young people an opportunity to make a difference in their community, where future generations of basketball stars can develop their skills.

How would you encourage others to get involved?
It's really easy. Right now, you can visit Sprite.com or Facebook.com/Sprite and find and nominate a basketball court in your area that could use some refreshment. We're taking nominations until April 8, and fans can begin voting on finalists beginning in May. You can keep checking those sites for more opportunities to revamp playgrounds, athletic fields and other community spaces throughout the year.

Can you tell us a little about your cartoon, 'The LeBrons'?
The series is about the characters I developed through the Nike commercials. Each character represents four different sides of my personality: Kid, Wise, Business and Athlete. The episodes will have plenty of humor and are designed to relay a series of positive messages.

What made you want to make it an entire show?
The series allows me to continue to connect with young people through an entertaining and meaningful way and help make an impact with today's youth.

James Franco to Teach a Class About James Franco

If there's one indisputable truism of the 21st century, it's that James Franco can do pretty much whatever he wants. He's one of Hollywood's most sought-after actors (every bit as comfortable in dramas like 'Milk' as he is smoking a cross joint and mumbling "I thought hurricane season was over" in lighter fare like 'Pineapple Express'), and he's not just nominated for an Oscar this year, he's also co-hosting the ceremony. Moreover, the dude is gearing up to direct an episode of soap opera mainstay 'General Hospital,' and it would seem as if he's simultaneously attending approximately 93 percent of the country's finest graduate schools.

But apparently that's not enough, as Movieline is reporting that Franco has tired of spending all his time in academia as a student, and so he'll soon begin teaching a course of his own at Columbia College Hollywood (not affiliated with Columbia University, from which Franco received his MFA in 2010). Professor James Franco might seem like a bit of a stretch, but surely none of Columbia College Hollywood's tenured faculty knows quite as much about the subject of the course: James Franco.

"Master Class: Editing James Franco ... With James Franco" is what the class is called, and according to Columbia College Hollywood's press release, its curriculum will allow "12 of the private film school's best editing students [to] create a 30-minute documentary film from videographic footage from Mr. Franco's own unorthodox career." Yup, students enrolled in the course will dedicate their time to making a short film about James Franco, under the occasional tutelage and guidance of James Franco.

The press release explains: "Mr. Franco's frequent collaborator and editor Tyler Danna is teaching the course ... Mr. Franco is providing the footage -- much of it from behind the scenes on short films he has directed -- and the conception for the course and will speak to the students weekly via live feed (Skype) and attend the weekly class sessions when his schedule allows. The student editors will seek to create a cinematic image of James Franco through the footage."

So ... the course is using Franco as a conduit to explore the parallel notions of public persona and the death of privacy in the 21st century? Or perhaps it's about a celebrity's capacity to reclaim his own image? Or maybe it's just about James Franco doing pretty much whatever he wants. That said, the press release ominously concludes that "the class sessions themselves will be taped and be part of the final film created by the class or another project ... There is the potential to carry the class forward with 12 different editors in the spring quarter and beyond as the film project continues." So what they're saying is that the course could ultimately serve as the foundation of something much larger. Has James Franco stumbled upon an unprecedentedly brilliant and cost-effective means of getting people to make a biopic about himself?

Who knows. All that's clear is that this is James Franco's world, and we're just gawking at it. It actually seems rather neat to us that an actor is using his celebrity to such compelling ends, and making of his life whatever he sees fit, rather than falling lockstep into the pre-determined rules by which all James Dean reincarnates must abide. What say you? Does this bear the footprint of an empowered intellectual, a young man having fun with his life, or a pretty actor drunk on his own ego? And what will he do next?

James Franco, Black Swan Win Big at the Independent Spirit Awards (omg!)

One day before his hosting gig at the Academy Awards, James Franco took home the award for best male lead at the Independent Spirit Awards.

When accepting his award, Franco, who is nominated for Best Actor at Sunday's Oscars for his 127 Hours role, thanked his agent, manager and publicist, who told him to take a break from school, saying, "James, you're an effing idiot if you don't do this movie."

After winning the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for her role in Black Swan, Natalie Portman also won the Spirit Award for best female lead. Black Swan also won for best film, and Darren Aronofsky took best director.

Who do you think will win the Oscars?

In what could be a precursor to the big show on Sunday, The King's Speech, the Oscar Best Picture front-runner, won for best foreign film. Meanwhile, Oscar underdog John Hawkes won for best male supporting for his role in Winter's Bone.

British street artist Banksy was not on hand to accept the award for best documentary for his film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, which is also nominated for an Academy Award.

NBA All-Stars LeBron James, Dwight Howard, More Talk Hoops, Hip-Hop

Hip-hop and sports are practically kindred spirits, especially when it comes to basketball. At this year's NBA All-Star Weekend, a number of hoop stars, and the wife of one player in particular, wholeheartedly agreed with this observation.

"They always say all rappers want to be basketball players, [and] all basketball players want to be rappers," La La Vazquez, wife of New York Knick Carmelo Anthony and ex-MTV VJ, told MTV News.

Over the years, a number of NBA players have actually become rappers on the side. Besides four championships — three with the Los Angeles Lakers, one with the Miami Heat — Shaquille O'Neal also managed to release four albums. The first, 1993's Shaq Diesel, went platinum and the third, 1996's You Can't Stop the Reign, featured a pair of verses from the Notorious B.I.G. on its title track. More recently, L.A. Laker Ron Artest has embarked on a rap career, while his teammate Kobe Bryant once kicked rhymes on R&B singer Brian McKnight's "Hold Me."

Not every player necessarily has rap dreams to go along with their hoop dreams, though.

"Every player except me wants to be a rapper," said Dwight Howard of the NBA's Orlando Magic. "I don't want to do the rap thing."

Howard did add though about his fellow NBA stars, "We love music. We love hip-hop and we support it."

LeBron James, who is famously and charitably good friends with Jay-Z, mentioned how basketball players are frequently name-checked in song. For example, on Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind," the MC rhymes, "Jesus paying LeBron, I'm paying Dwyane Wade."

This synergy between players and rappers ultimately boils down to mutual respect.

"We all came from nothing," Boston Celtic Kevin Garnett told us. "The appreciation factor for each other, the fact you gotta grind and work hard to get where you at, it's similar. It's a very similar industry."

Garnett's teammate and fellow All-Star Rajon Rondo added, "We respect those guys the way they respect us. It kind of goes hand in hand. Rappers love to come see us play. We love to see them perform."

James Franco can breathe a tiny sigh of relief.

The Oscar host, who is also nominated for Best Actor at Sunday's show, already won a best actor award this weekend – at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday.

"I just went through film school at NYU and finished my thesis film, so independent film means a lot to me," said the actor, who was nominated for his role in 127 Hours as real life adventurer Aron Ralston, who had to sever his own arm when he got trapped under a boulder in 2003.

Natalie Portman, the heavily favored frontrunner for Oscar's Best Actress award, took home the Spirit award for female acting for Black Swan, which also won for best picture and best director for Darren Aronosky on Saturday.

The Oscar Best Picture favorite, The King's Speech, nabbed the Spirit prize for best foreign flm.

Winter's Bone stars John Hawkes and actress Dale Dickey took home supporting actor awards.

The wind gusted and the temperatures dropped outside at the Spirit awards, but inside a very pregnant Portman glowed as she made her way to her table and stopped to say a quick "hello" to fellow actresses Catherine Keener, Sarah Paulson and Amanda Peet. Liev Schreiber also headed to the table to chat with the group and was joined shortly after girlfriend Naomi Watts.

Meanwhile, Kate Walsh had a mini Grey's Anatomy reunion and caught up with former costar Sandra Oh.

Warren Beatty and wife Annette Bening were lovey-dovey throughout the show, as were Jon Hamm and longtime girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt, who sat cozily huddled together at their table.

At one point Bening made time to greet Nicole Kidman with a long hug and to chat with her and husband Keith Urban during a commercial break.

Jay-Z, LeBron James Talk Two Kings Charity, Doing 'Good All Over'

Jay-Z and LeBron James don't just want to hold a can of soda and smile for the cameras. The two men prefer to be hands-on when it comes to giving back to the community. So during NBA All-Star weekend festivities this past Saturday, Hov and King James personally greeted children at the Boys & Girls Club of Los Angeles and unveiled a newly renovated gymnasium at their facility.

For the third year in a row, Jay-Z and LeBron's Two Kings charity teamed up with Sprite to promote a worthy cause at All-Star Weekend. MTV News spoke to James and Jay about their participation.

"If you stay focused and you follow your dream, stay in school, you can be ... well, you might not be this tall," Jay told the club members, gesturing at James as wife Beyoncé looked on. "But you can definitely make it in life."

Although the duo are longtime friends, they're also technically rivals of sorts. James, of course, now plays for the Miami Heat, while Jay is a minority owner of the New Jersey Nets. Nevertheless, the pair are close and have used their popularity for philanthropic purposes.

"You've seen LeBron James on TV," Jay-Z told MTV News of why someone like the Heat star is an effective role model. "Just that thing that's tangible, that they can touch him and shake his hand and know that this is a young man who comes from the same areas as they do, and look where he's made it to. So it makes it real."

James, who was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, echoed the Brooklyn-born MC's sentiments.

"Could you imagine if Michael Jordan showed up to your community?" James said. "Or whoever that you just dreamed and loved and watched every day on TV and you thought that was superhuman, just showed up to a community [center]? That one moment right there could be the difference between you making a left or making a right."

In addition to making renovations to the Boys & Girls Club gym, Jay and LeBron also unveiled a mural by famed graffiti artist and designer Mr. Cartoon, who was also present at the event.

"Whenever I'm doing a big mural like this, I gotta think about, 'It's there for the youngsters, it's there for the kids, but I want it to be on a hard-core graffiti website," the Los Angeles native told us. "I want to motivate and inspire the youngsters. I want kids to look at it like, 'Man, I want to do that!' "

According to Jay-Z, actively participating in events like these, as opposed to just posing for pictures, is essential.

"We wanted to just have a further dialogue with the people we were doing business with," Jay explained. "To let them know we weren't just paid endorsers and gonna sit there and just be smiling with a can in our hand or something. We wanted to take this [business] relationship and do some good. Take all these people, put them in a room, take their power and influence, and use them. But use them in a good way. Use them to affect good all over."

That same evening, the Two Kings charity held its fifth annual dinner, which was sponsored by Microsoft's Bing search engine. Some of the heavyweights in attendance included Ne-Yo, Miami Heat player Chris Bosh, Kanye West, Leonardo DiCaprio and Drake.

Anne Hathaway & James Franco Do Grease's 'You're The One That I Want'

Is James Franco the one that Anne Hathaway wants for the Oscars?

Apparently so, as the Academy Awards co-hosts reenact the iconic carnival scene ("You're The One That I Want") from 1978's Grease in a YouTube clip that the Oscar-nominated actor posted on Twitter Wednesday afternoon.

In the 19-second video, Franco slicks back his hair a la John Travolta's Danny Zuko and Hathaway shakes her tush – clad in the skin-tight leather pants made famous by Olivia Newton-John's Sandy Olsson.

Does James Franco Have Anne Hathaway's Oscar Vote?

James Franco will be pulling double duty at this year's Academy Awards, as both a host and a nominee.

So will fellow emcee Anne Hathaway show him some love by throwing her vote his way for Best Actor in 127 Hours?

Unfortunately for Franco, she's not saying.

"Actually, the ballot says on the front: 'Important, do not tell anyone, especially The Hollywood Reporter," she laughs during an interview with magazine, the pair's first together, before adding diplomatically, "I'm a big fan of James's performance."

As for what viewers can expect come Sunday night, THR reports that organizers will stage the Oscars as a visual journey through movie history, with Franco and Hathaway travelling back in time in an opening montage. They'll end up inside a digitally-enhanced "virtual" set.

One thing we won't see: The actors ribbing their fellow thespians, a la Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes.

"I can guarantee that if you're looking for someone to call people out, we're not your hosts," Hathaway, 28, says. "I think that humor is really difficult to pull off, and I'm not particularly adept at it. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it. Also, I don't mean to sound overly serious, but I am the youngest host in history and I have no business being cynical or calling anyone out. I certainly haven't earned the right to do that."

Asked whether Aron Ralston, whom Franco, 32, played in 127 Hours, might show up on stage at some point, the actor says, "Who knows? Aron is full of surprises. I'm sure he'll find his way into the show."

Franco – who says he's just learning how to use Twitter and "it might be fun" to try Tweeting during the show – also says he's managed to reduce some of the pressure of being a nominee.

"Well, nobody is shy about saying Colin Firth is going to win [for The King's Speech]," he says. "I've accepted that. By hosting, it makes it easier to go to the events and not feel like a total schmo."

Jesse James to Write Tell-All Memoir

In what might be the day's strangest and most surprising news, Jesse James will be writing a tell-all book. Entertainment Weekly reports that Sandra Bullock's ex-husband has signed on with Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, to write a revealing memoir. Reportedly, the book will include intimate details about his marriage to America's sweetheart, Ms. Bullock.

The book, which is allegedly titled, American Outlaw, will also include a look into his current engagement to reality TV star and tattoo aficionado, Kat von D.

James sent shockwaves through Hollywood last year when he was caught cheating on then-wife Bullock with Michelle "Bombshell" McGee. He started dating von D last August after his divorce to Bullock was finalized in June.

James Franco's Latest Role: Interviewer for Harper's Bazaar

Does James Franco sleep? And if so, when?

Now, in between teaching a course on himself, co-hosting the Oscars and appearing on soap operas, Franco is wearing the hat of Harper's Bazaar interviewer, with a Q&A in the March issue with Gucci designer Frida Giannini. Franco has also posed in ads for the design house.

The actor has a bit of a professional crush on the pretty blonde designer. He admits, "Frida and I have been in sync since we met. I love her work, and she supports mine. Creatively, I know we will always be in line with each other."

Franco gets inside Giannini's head with the kinds of questions a normal person would ask of a designer, namely, why do we see such wild creations on the runway when the average person can't wear or afford them?

"The big stores like in New York or London or Paris, the main flagships, they always have the entire collection-even the extreme pieces. There are people who are waiting for the extreme pieces from the fashion show. We are not the kind of company that thinks, Okay, I'll do something for the runway, and I'll make an entire new collection to sell."

Giannini tells the actor that she doesn't consider herself an artist because her work is so temporal.

"To me, art is not something that after six months you change. That's why I say I'm not an artist. I need to try to sell every single collection to make it a success," the designer says.

Jay-Z, LeBron James Attend 'Two Kings' Charity Event In L.A.

LOS ANGELES — On Saturday afternoon, many of the kids at the Boys & Girls Club of Los Angeles had the opportunity to meet and greet Jay-Z and NBA superstar LeBron James. More importantly, however, those same children will now be able to enjoy a completely renovated gym featuring a mural by esteemed artist and L.A. native Mr. Cartoon — and, hopefully, received some added inspiration to achieve their dreams — thanks to Jay and LeBron's Two Kings charity and its co-sponsor, the Coca-Cola Company's Sprite brand.

The renovation was the first under Coca-Cola's Sprite Spark Parks Project, which plans to completely renovate more than 100 neighborhood spaces, including parks, fields and basketball courts.

MTV News caught up with the rap icon and the basketball superstar at the gym's unveiling, which was held in conjunction with the NBA All-Star Weekend. Jay said he and James continue to give back because they were once just like those children in the room.

"We are those kids that didn't have those opportunities, and luckily lightning struck for us," explained Jay. "We happened to be in the right place at the right time, with God-given talent. ... Some other people need help and opportunity, so it's empathy. I am you. I've been in the same place that these kids have been."

Jay said the Two Kings charity started out because he and James wanted to utilize the financial clout of some of the people with whom they were doing business. They wanted to be more than paid endorsers smiling with a soft-drink can. They wanted to use their opportunities to achieve something positive.

"We wanted to take this relationship and do some good," maintained Jay. "Take all these people and put them in a room. Take their power and influence and use them, but use them in a good way to effect good all over."

This is the third consecutive year that Jay-Z and James' charity has hosted such an event during NBA All-Star Weekend. In 2009, Two Kings donated 150 instruments to the music program at Mesa Arts Academy in Mesa, Arizona. And last year, the two celebrities led a mentoring session at the East Dallas Club of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dallas in Texas.

In addition, Sprite has provided scholarships to top-performing students on their behalf.

Lights! Camera! Dunk! LeBron James to Make His Acting Debut

LeBron James is making the jump from all-star NBA basketball player to Hollywood movie star. The basketball guru is planning on making his acting debut playing a star NBA player (surprise!) in the film, 'Ballers,' E!Online.com reports.

'Ballers,' a film about a bunch of guys who go to an adult basketball camp, is the first collaboration between James and Oscar-winning producer Brian Grazer. Rumors swirled that the A-list producer wanted to jump ship after James' negative publicity following his move from Cleveland to Maimi, but E!Online.com has learned the reports are untrue.

In fact, the superstar athlete and Grazer were spotted together Thursday night at Siren Studios at a party for James' upcoming animated series, 'The LeBrons.' And a rep for Grazer confirms that the pair is hoping to start shooting this summer.

James Franco, Mom and Grandma Join Twitter

It's embarassing enough for a normal person when their family members enter the social networking game and exponentially more so when that person is famous, or so one would think.

Oscar nominee James Franco has just found out how it feels, now that his mother and grandmother have joined Twitter. Luckily for the '127 Hours' star, their tweets have been pretty benign (and adorable) so far.

Franco, who joined Twitter today, is not following his family just yet, but might want to get in on the action while he's still the topic of conversation.

James' grandmother, Mitzie, who writes as @GrandmaMitz, has recently joined other "#mominees," a group of women on Twitter whose children are up for Oscars, and has, in a short time, expressed not only her pride for her grandson, but a period of time spent in Japan and her recent fashion choices.
